CubeMX does not run - just shows start screen, then stops

That's not much information.

On a proper OS, you could start CubeMX from a console and watch for error messages.

And since it is Eclipse-based, the usual log files are created in a subdirectory.
Check those for further information.

Is the CubeMX (standalone) Eclipse based?

Try to launch the installation using cmd and please provide your .log.
