But what Mr Bensch didn't say is that we're in a global chip shortage, have been for well over a year and it might easily drag on for another year. It's very frustrating, and I don't think that ST are significantly better (or worse) than any other chip manufacturer.

I don't know if the chip you're after is a particularly new one (in which case demand might not have ramped up and there's the possibility of more supply than demand) but many product-manufacturers are desperately trying to hunt around to get parts for things we hope to sell over the next few months, perhaps buying something that might fit if an adapter-board is used. If we might want it in a few months and a distributor has it now - we buy it now. Which only makes the shortage worse of course...
