Assistance Required for SWV ITM Data Console Configuration on STM32F407VET6 with STM32CubeIDE

Hello,

I recently purchased STM32 F4VE  trying to print text on SWV but noting shows at port 0, shared all the necessary information below.

Here's what i did :

  • I am using generic st-linkv2 (version : 3.14.5) and STM32F407VET6 is in Normal mode (not DFU)
  • Using STM32CubeIDE, I created a project by selecting the STM32F407VET6TR board.
  • In the .ioc device configuration, I changed the clock to 84 MHz.
  • In main.c, inside the int main -> while loop, I added a printf statement to print "Hello."
  • In syscalls.c added required code for ITM.
  • In the debugger configuration, I enabled SWV (84 MHz).
  • Before starting debugging, I opened the SWV ITM Data Console, selected port 0 in the settings, and clicked on the red button to start.
  • Nothing prints on ITM console.

Despite these steps, nothing prints on the ITM console. Could you please help me identify what might be going wrong?

Hi @Tesla DeLorean thank you for the quick response,

I just debugged the problem with the PB3/SWO pin. It turns out that this ST-Link USB stick doesn't have an SWO pin to connect. I followed a YouTube tutorial on how to extract the SWO connection from the ST-Link and now the STM32f407VET6 able to use print the printf statements.

Here is a picture of my ST-Link with the SWO connection I made.

Hope this helps others facing the same issue.

Why couldn't you have just used the standard ITM_SendChar() from core_cm3.h ?

Enabling on each call?

Can you use ITM_SendChar() directly?

Does the UART output method work? Can you print the SystemCoreClock value?

Check PB3/SWO gets all the way from the chip to the ST-LINK

Authentic ST-LINK/V2, show connectivity in STM32 Cube Programmer, and SWV pane
