Sorry, I gave up.I have other things to do (just taken delivery of a new laser-cutter :) and I'll come back to this some time next year. Perhaps there'll have been an update by then.

Well, I gave up.I installed a linux VNC connection instead, and can program the device from there, at least after altering the /etc/udev/rules.d/49-stlinkv2-1.rules file to make the linux device have 666 permissions. The default seems to need a group...
