Okay. Did you do what the message said to do?
Could also try STM32CubeProgrammer to upgrade the firmware.

Hi,
I had the "Failed to start GDB server" issue at the second launch of a fresh installation of STM32CUBE IDE 1.4.0
I reinstalled the IDE but it did finish the installation and disappeared... oO'
... Avast ate those files... -__-
Hope this can help some of you to save time with this issue.
Bonne journée.
Max.

Thanks for the info, the message is clear enough to find which files the anti virus ate.
For C1257, it is not the same.
It's STLink has an old firmware and must be upgraded.
There is a menu in STM32CubeIde to upgrade at will in Help=>STLink Upgrade or you can click 'Yes' when prompted during debug as stated in the msg box.
Rgds,
Laurent
