Hi, I am new to STM32. Currently I am using a STM32F042K6 nucleo board.
I am trying to creat a pair of PWM complementary signals with fixed amount of pulses.
I use STM32CubeIDE + HAL.
The basic idea is to use TIM1 to generate the PWM complementary signals, and set RCR as the 150-1 ( so counts 150 pulses). When the interrupt comes, stop the PWM signals.
Below is the auto generated TIM1 init code,:
/* USER CODE END TIM1_Init 1 */
htim1.Instance = TIM1;
htim1.Init.Prescaler = 6-1;
htim1.Init.CounterMode = TIM_COUNTERMODE_UP;
htim1.Init.Period = 80-1;
htim1.Init.ClockDivision = TIM_CLOCKDIVISION_DIV1;
htim1.Init.RepetitionCounter = 150-1;
htim1.Init.AutoReloadPreload = TIM_AUTORELOAD_PRELOAD_ENABLE;
if (HAL_TIM_Base_Init(&htim1) != HAL_OK)
{
Error_Handler();
}
sClockSourceConfig.ClockSource = TIM_CLOCKSOURCE_INTERNAL;
if (HAL_TIM_ConfigClockSource(&htim1, &sClockSourceConfig) != HAL_OK)
{
Error_Handler();
}
if (HAL_TIM_PWM_Init(&htim1) != HAL_OK)
{
Error_Handler();
}
sMasterConfig.MasterOutputTrigger = TIM_TRGO_RESET;
sMasterConfig.MasterSlaveMode = TIM_MASTERSLAVEMODE_DISABLE;
if (HAL_TIMEx_MasterConfigSynchronization(&htim1, &sMasterConfig) != HAL_OK)
{
Error_Handler();
}
sConfigOC.OCMode = TIM_OCMODE_PWM1;
sConfigOC.Pulse = 40;
sConfigOC.OCPolarity = TIM_OCPOLARITY_HIGH;
sConfigOC.OCNPolarity = TIM_OCNPOLARITY_HIGH;
sConfigOC.OCFastMode = TIM_OCFAST_ENABLE;
sConfigOC.OCIdleState = TIM_OCIDLESTATE_RESET;
sConfigOC.OCNIdleState = TIM_OCNIDLESTATE_RESET;
if (HAL_TIM_PWM_ConfigChannel(&htim1, &sConfigOC, TIM_CHANNEL_1) != HAL_OK)
{
Error_Handler();
}
sBreakDeadTimeConfig.OffStateRunMode = TIM_OSSR_DISABLE;
sBreakDeadTimeConfig.OffStateIDLEMode = TIM_OSSI_DISABLE;
sBreakDeadTimeConfig.LockLevel = TIM_LOCKLEVEL_OFF;
sBreakDeadTimeConfig.DeadTime = 6;
sBreakDeadTimeConfig.BreakState = TIM_BREAK_DISABLE;
sBreakDeadTimeConfig.BreakPolarity = TIM_BREAKPOLARITY_HIGH;
sBreakDeadTimeConfig.AutomaticOutput = TIM_AUTOMATICOUTPUT_DISABLE;
if (HAL_TIMEx_ConfigBreakDeadTime(&htim1, &sBreakDeadTimeConfig) != HAL_OK)
{
Error_Handler();
}
/* USER CODE BEGIN TIM1_Init 2 */
/* USER CODE END TIM1_Init 2 */
HAL_TIM_MspPostInit(&htim1);
}
I have enabled the NVIC :
In main.c, I started the Timer before while loop
/* Initialize all configured peripherals */
MX_GPIO_Init();
MX_TIM1_Init();
/* USER CODE BEGIN 2 */
HAL_TIM_Base_Start_IT(&htim1);
if (HAL_TIM_PWM_Start(&htim1, TIM_CHANNEL_1) != HAL_OK)
{
Error_Handler();
}
if (HAL_TIMEx_PWMN_Start(&htim1, TIM_CHANNEL_1) != HAL_OK)
{
Error_Handler();
}
/* USER CODE END 2 */
/* Infinite loop */
/* USER CODE BEGIN WHILE */
while (1)
Then, in stm32f0xx_hal_tim.c, under HAL_TIM_IRQHandler, I added the stop PWM function under TIM1 update event.
/* TIM Update event */
if (__HAL_TIM_GET_FLAG(htim, TIM_FLAG_UPDATE) != RESET)
{
if (__HAL_TIM_GET_IT_SOURCE(htim, TIM_IT_UPDATE) != RESET)
{
__HAL_TIM_CLEAR_IT(htim, TIM_IT_UPDATE);
HAL_TIM_PWM_Stop(htim, TIM_CHANNEL_1);
HAL_TIMEx_PWMN_Stop(htim, TIM_CHANNEL_1);
//HAL_TIM_Base_DeInit(htim);
#if (USE_HAL_TIM_REGISTER_CALLBACKS == 1)
htim->PeriodElapsedCallback(htim);
#else
HAL_TIM_PeriodElapsedCallback(htim);
#endif /* USE_HAL_TIM_REGISTER_CALLBACKS */
}
}
...
I am expecting that after 150 pulses, the pair of pwm signals will stop.
After building the project, I set a breakpoint at previous code block, right before the HAL_TIM_PWM_Stop function.
__HAL_TIM_CLEAR_IT(htim, TIM_IT_UPDATE); // breakpoint
Then I start the debugging, when the program stops at here, I can see the PWM outputs , shown as below: if I resume the program, the output stops immediately.
If I remove the breakpoint, just let the program run, there is no PWM output at all. Even if I lower the frequency and increase the RCR, i still don't see any PWM output as soon as I launch the program.
I have also used the more regular way of callback function:
/* USER CODE BEGIN 4 */
void HAL_TIM_PeriodElapsedCallback (TIM_HandleTypeDef * htim){
if(htim == &htim1)
{
HAL_TIM_PWM_Stop(htim, TIM_CHANNEL_1);
HAL_TIMEx_PWMN_Stop(htim, TIM_CHANNEL_1);
}
}
/* USER CODE END 4 */
It is the same.
I play around with the breakpoint and can only conclude that, the program went into interrupt immediately after the HAL_TIM_Base_Start_IT(&htim1); and stops the PWM output right away, the interrupt was not triggered by RCR's update event.
My question is how can I solve it? What am I missing?
Thank you very much in advance!

This is consequence of using Cube/HAL without attempting to read its sources.
In some of the "setup" functions, Cube sets TIMx_UGR.EG, which in turn sets TIMx_SR.UF. Either clear it before enabling interrupts, or don't use interrupts at all - use One-Pulse Mode with RCR, it will generate the required number of pulses and stop automatically.

Pretty sure HAL only want you to call one start routine. You're calling several. Also, the beauty of RCR is that the timer can stop without the need for you to stop it. Put it into one pulse mode and it should stop once RCR reaches 0 and underflows (which generates an update, which stops the timer when in one pulse mode). No interrupt needed. Only one call to HAL_TIM_PWM_Start. 90% sure that will work. I usually program timers directly with registers since the HAL timer code is messy, and everyone's requirements are very slightly different.

Hi,Thanks for your reply!
I tried the set up with only Onepulse mode + PWM completmentary output.
Simply as follow:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Only outputting PWM:
--------------------------------------------------------------------
But there is still no PWM output at all from the start.
It seems that i'm still doing something wrong, can you give me some
suggestion?
Thank you very much in advance!
Kind regards,
JL

I'm not sure what the problem is, but I can get this working on the H743 by following the steps you're doing. I don't have an F0 board.
Here's the output showing exactly 10 (RCR + 1) pulses.
Here is the mostly CubeMX generated main.c file. Perhaps you can compare between yours to find the issue. This is the only line I added:
HAL_TIM_PWM_Start(&htim1, TIM_CHANNEL_1);
It's also possible that this behaves differently on the F0 family and we're missing something.

Hi, thanks again for the reply!
I was setting the PWM output frequency at 1MHz, seeing your project I changed the frequency with your parameters.
And I did see the fixed amount of PWM pulses from my oscilloscope this time!:
which means the method does work! but probably 1Mhz + 10 pulses was too quick for me to observe.
Are you using a logic analyzer to capture the signal? May I know the part number?
Thanks!
Kind regards,
J Luo
