FDCAN Configurations to Transmit Data in Classic mode

mayank__
Associate II

Devkit - NUCLEO-H563ZI

IDE - STM32CubeIDE Version: 1.16.1 Build: 22882_20240916_0822 (UTC)

Details - Trying to create a sample program for FDCAN in which the program transmits the data using the CAN protocol. I have tried different methods but was not able to succeed.

Sanity Checks - Browsed for different tweaks and fixes but none of them worked for me.

Attached the code below

Hello,

First, you don't need a transceiver in the Loopback mode.

Second, as you are in Classic mode, these parameters are wrong for transmit as these are for FDCAN.

txHeader.DataLength          = FDCAN_DLC_BYTES_12;
txHeader.BitRateSwitch       = FDCAN_BRS_ON;
txHeader.FDFormat            = FDCAN_FD_CAN;

So you need to use these parameters instead:

  txHeader.DataLength          = FDCAN_DLC_BYTES_8;  /* maximum 8 bytes*/
  txHeader.BitRateSwitch       = FDCAN_BRS_OFF;
  txHeader.FDFormat            = FDCAN_CLASSIC_CAN;

Please refer to this example on Github:

https://github.com/STMicroelectronics/STM32CubeH5/blob/main/Projects/NUCLEO-H563ZI/Examples/FDCAN/FDCAN_Classic_Frame_Networking/Src/main.c

PS: only Tx pin can be probed with your analyzer.

You haven't indicated what other CAN node you're trying to send a message to?

Your seg1 and seg2 don't look correct.

What is your ABP1 frequency and what CAN baud rate do you need.

Do not have any idea about configuring seg 1 and seg 2. Please can you provide brief information?

I am not sending message to any other node right now. Will be verifying the data using Logic Analyzer for successful transmission.

APB1 frequency is 250 MHz, CAN Frequency 8 MHz, Current baud rate 166666 bit/s and do not require any specific baudrate right now just trying to successfully transmit a data first of all.

Hello @mayank__ ,

First, as you are using normal mode:

  hfdcan1.Init.Mode = FDCAN_MODE_NORMAL;

Could you please provide more details on the CAN bus: nodes connected to the bus, your HW setup including the transceiver?

Second: these are bad timing parameters SEG1=1 and SEG2=1. You need to increase these values as much as possible and decrease the presale as much as possible to increase the bit time sampling rate where SEG1 =~(75% to 85%) of the bit time:

  hfdcan1.Init.NominalPrescaler = 16;
  hfdcan1.Init.NominalTimeSeg1 = 1;
  hfdcan1.Init.NominalTimeSeg2 = 1;

 And based on what you provided as information, I have a doubt you are using the FDCAN in "standalone" i.e. you didn't setup any CAN bus: no transceiver, no nodes connected to the bus which is not the correct setup as FDCAN is in normal mode.

Please clarify all these points.

You need to have a second CAN node to transmit to and you need a proper CAN bus termination with the 120Ohm resistor on each end. Or you have to set the CAN controller to loopback.

 My doubt is confirmed. So you didn't setup any CAN bus. CAN is not UART or SPI to test it in "standalone" when it's configured in Normal mode. You need to configure it in one of the Loopback modes (Internal or External).

But since (I think) you need to visualize frames with a Logic analyzer, use External Loopack mode and probe the signals on FDCAN_Tx.

Modify the bit timings as I described previously.

Hope I answered your question.

I was mistaken about APB1, which is use on other STM32.

The H563 has it's own clock for the FDCAN

Default is 8MHz, but i changed it to 250MHz. So the above chart i posted works

I have applied changes to my code by referring to Loopback Sample Code of STM32 and connected STM32 to a Tranceiver. I am using Classic Mode and Normal mode as configurations and below image for configurations

mayank___1-1729248032659.png

But the Loopback sample code is giving some transmission signals on logic analyzer

Still not able to get anything on the logic analyzer, both TX and RX stays high all the time not getting any data transmitted. Please refer to the below code

Hello,

First, you don't need a transceiver in the Loopback mode.

Second, as you are in Classic mode, these parameters are wrong for transmit as these are for FDCAN.

txHeader.DataLength          = FDCAN_DLC_BYTES_12;
txHeader.BitRateSwitch       = FDCAN_BRS_ON;
txHeader.FDFormat            = FDCAN_FD_CAN;

So you need to use these parameters instead:

  txHeader.DataLength          = FDCAN_DLC_BYTES_8;  /* maximum 8 bytes*/
  txHeader.BitRateSwitch       = FDCAN_BRS_OFF;
  txHeader.FDFormat            = FDCAN_CLASSIC_CAN;

Please refer to this example on Github:

https://github.com/STMicroelectronics/STM32CubeH5/blob/main/Projects/NUCLEO-H563ZI/Examples/FDCAN/FDCAN_Classic_Frame_Networking/Src/main.c

PS: only Tx pin can be probed with your analyzer.
