Can't Get Timer 15 IRQ to Fire on STM32L496

jvavra

This is driving my crazy. Trying to port some code from a STM32L432 to a STM32L496. The L432 code has worked fine for years. There are a few differences between the two micros, mostly related to USB vs USB OTG. But I thought I had everything ironed out (with the help of CubeMX).

However, I have a simple timer interrupt that should fire every millisecond. It's not working at all. Never fires. I finally went back to basics and created a simple project using CubeMX. I STILL can't get the interrupt to work. I set a breakpoint in the ISR, and it never hits.

I know interrupts in general work; I was able to get a number of other interrupts for USB, SPI, DMA all working fine in my full project. Before I abandon this timer altogether, does anyone see something I'm missing to get this to work correctly?

I see no functions which actually start the timer. You call MX_TIM15_Init, but that just configures it, it doesn't start it.

If that's not it, is the IRQ handler function implemented somewhere? Does its name match the name specified in the vector table?

I added an explicit start of TIM15:

/**
  * @brief TIM15 Initialization Function
  * @param None
  * @retval None
  */
static void MX_TIM15_Init(void)
{

  TIM_ClockConfigTypeDef sClockSourceConfig = {0};
  TIM_MasterConfigTypeDef sMasterConfig = {0};
  TIM_OC_InitTypeDef sConfigOC = {0};
  TIM_BreakDeadTimeConfigTypeDef sBreakDeadTimeConfig = {0};

  htim15.Instance = TIM15;
  htim15.Init.Prescaler = 0;
  htim15.Init.CounterMode = TIM_COUNTERMODE_UP;
  htim15.Init.Period = 65535;
  htim15.Init.ClockDivision = TIM_CLOCKDIVISION_DIV1;
  htim15.Init.RepetitionCounter = 0;
  htim15.Init.AutoReloadPreload = TIM_AUTORELOAD_PRELOAD_DISABLE;
  if (HAL_TIM_Base_Init(&htim15) != HAL_OK)
  {
    Error_Handler();
  }
  sClockSourceConfig.ClockSource = TIM_CLOCKSOURCE_INTERNAL;
  if (HAL_TIM_ConfigClockSource(&htim15, &sClockSourceConfig) != HAL_OK)
  {
    Error_Handler();
  }
  if (HAL_TIM_OC_Init(&htim15) != HAL_OK)
  {
    Error_Handler();
  }
  sMasterConfig.MasterOutputTrigger = TIM_TRGO_RESET;
  sMasterConfig.MasterSlaveMode = TIM_MASTERSLAVEMODE_DISABLE;
  if (HAL_TIMEx_MasterConfigSynchronization(&htim15, &sMasterConfig) != HAL_OK)
  {
    Error_Handler();
  }
  sConfigOC.OCMode = TIM_OCMODE_TIMING;
  sConfigOC.Pulse = 4000;
  sConfigOC.OCPolarity = TIM_OCPOLARITY_HIGH;
  sConfigOC.OCNPolarity = TIM_OCNPOLARITY_HIGH;
  sConfigOC.OCFastMode = TIM_OCFAST_DISABLE;
  sConfigOC.OCIdleState = TIM_OCIDLESTATE_RESET;
  sConfigOC.OCNIdleState = TIM_OCNIDLESTATE_RESET;
  if (HAL_TIM_OC_ConfigChannel(&htim15, &sConfigOC, TIM_CHANNEL_1) != HAL_OK)
  {
    Error_Handler();
  }
  if (HAL_TIM_OC_ConfigChannel(&htim15, &sConfigOC, TIM_CHANNEL_2) != HAL_OK)
  {
    Error_Handler();
  }
  sBreakDeadTimeConfig.OffStateRunMode = TIM_OSSR_DISABLE;
  sBreakDeadTimeConfig.OffStateIDLEMode = TIM_OSSI_DISABLE;
  sBreakDeadTimeConfig.LockLevel = TIM_LOCKLEVEL_OFF;
  sBreakDeadTimeConfig.DeadTime = 0;
  sBreakDeadTimeConfig.BreakState = TIM_BREAK_DISABLE;
  sBreakDeadTimeConfig.BreakPolarity = TIM_BREAKPOLARITY_HIGH;
  sBreakDeadTimeConfig.AutomaticOutput = TIM_AUTOMATICOUTPUT_DISABLE;
  if (HAL_TIMEx_ConfigBreakDeadTime(&htim15, &sBreakDeadTimeConfig) != HAL_OK)
  {
    Error_Handler();
  }

  HAL_TIM_MspPostInit(&htim15);

  HAL_TIM_Base_MspInit(&htim15);

  HAL_TIM_Base_Start(&htim15);

}

No change. I also verified that the name of the IRQ handler exactly matches what's in the vector table of the part. No change.

> HAL_TIM_Base_Start(&htim15);

HAL_TIM_Base_Start() doesn't enable interrupts.

HAL_TIM_Base_Start_IT() does.

That was the issue on my CubeMX project, thanks! So I got my simple project working, but my original project still wasn't hitting the ISR. Spent an entire day going through comparing code line by line, making everything match up...only to realize I had earlier edited the linker file to set the vector table start at a different address. Whoops. Thanks for the help!
