ADC always returns 0

I'm trying to read 2 ADC channels (ch 0-1) on an STM32G030C8T6 but the only result I can get from the ADC is a 0.

I've confirmed the voltages I'm trying to read are at ~1.6V and that the VREF+ pin is at ~2.7V using a multimeter so I dont believe its a hardware issue.

Looking at the SFRs in debug mode just before starting a conversion, all configuration registers seem normal and exactly as they were set in the device configuration tool, the GPIO MODER registers are set to analog, and the ADC clock is enabled in RCC. There were just two things that stood out to me which may or may not mean anything.

  1. When trying to do this using interrupts, the SFRs tab of the debugger would say that EOC in the ADC_ISR register is set, but if I assigned it to a variable or made a comparison to it in code, it would be unset. I.E the expression ((ADC1->ISR & ADC_ISR_EOC) == ADC_ISR_EOC) would evaluate to false even if the debugger said the EOC bit was set.
  2. The OVR and EOS flags in the ADC_ISR register are always set after a conversion, even if it was just a single conversion so there shouldnt have been a EOC flag set to trigger the OVR flag. The attached image is the ISR register directly after the first conversion in the code provided.

I've tried using "Sequencer set to fully configurable" and "Sequencer not set to fully configurable" modes along with continuous, discontinuous, and scan conversion modes and both possible overrun behaviours.

Edit forgot to add: The hadc1 instance doesn't report any errors and no errors get returned from any function.

If anyone has any ideas on what this could be it would be greatly appreciated since at this point I'm lost on where to go from here.

Hello @MMurr.2 ,

You must enable the ADC interrupt mode and configure the NVIC.

In addition, you must use this HAL_ADC_Start_IT() function to start the conversion of a regular group with interrupt. The interrupts enabled in this function according to the initialization parameters: EOC (end of conversion), EOS (end of sequence) and OVR overrun.

Otherwise, have a look at this video, it might help you.

BeST Regards,

Walid

I have done this, I just provided the minimum reproducible code for asking this question. The ISR gets called when a conversion is done but the data register is still always 0.

Try a single channel. Try the internal VREFINT channel.

Read out and check/post ADC and relevant GPIO registers content.

Looking at ADC registers is intrusive - some bits are cleared by reading the data register.

So I just tried it again today to try this and it worked perfectly - no changes to code or configuration whatsoever.

I am incredibly confused on what could've caused this but its working so I guess its ok now. Maybe my board just felt temperamental that day.

@MMurr.2 , If its a custom assembled board i'd check for cold solder mcu pins

we dont need to firmware by ourselves, lets talk

Make sure: Flash the MCU and set an output when ADC is working, power down and up the board and check. This to avoid "need to do a hot reset to kick the ADC on" or "it works only when debugging"

Hi, did you find any solution?
