ST-LINK for USB UART stops working

We use STM32H7 NUCLEO board. The connection is done via UART to the host via the UART ST-LINK interface (using the USB VCP bridged by the 'Debug MCU' and the main CPU).

On some boards, it works fine, forever. On some other board the connection gets lost - no UART connection anymore to the main MCU.

It seems to happen on Windows 10 and Windows 7 computers.

The USB connection via the ST-LINK USB stops working (VCP UART over it stops, Memory Device via USB stops).

Also the SWV Viewer connection is lost.

The only thing what is still working is the memory device (with the two MBED files) located in the ST-LINK MCU. But the USB connection via ST-LINK MCU on NUCLEO board seems to stop working.

We do not find any reason why the main MCU should crash (to cause this issue). After we reconnect the UART terminal VCP UART connection, the MCU seems to be running still.

Why could we lose the UART connection via the USB ST-LINK to the NUCLEO MCU?

I have been experiencing the same problem. Seems to be related to a recent upgrade to the firmware on the STLINK for NUCLEO.

Does windows recognise the STLINK and its devices? Did you check for bad cables? Did you check the boards for damage?
