Hello,
I'm trying to get used with the HAL APIs by doing an exercises with USART of the mentioned board.
The exercise is a simple one in which I try to send a character from my PC terminal using Tera Term and if this character is 'a' I want the MCU on the board to light up the user LED.
I have configured USART2 module with CubeMx. The generated configuration code for the USART2 module is this:
static void MX_USART2_UART_Init(void)
{
/* USER CODE BEGIN USART2_Init 0 */
/* USER CODE END USART2_Init 0 */
/* USER CODE BEGIN USART2_Init 1 */
/* USER CODE END USART2_Init 1 */
huart2.Instance = USART2;
huart2.Init.BaudRate = 115200;
huart2.Init.WordLength = UART_WORDLENGTH_8B;
huart2.Init.StopBits = UART_STOPBITS_1;
huart2.Init.Parity = UART_PARITY_NONE;
huart2.Init.Mode = UART_MODE_TX_RX;
huart2.Init.HwFlowCtl = UART_HWCONTROL_NONE;
huart2.Init.OverSampling = UART_OVERSAMPLING_16;
if (HAL_UART_Init(&huart2) != HAL_OK)
{
Error_Handler();
}
/* USER CODE BEGIN USART2_Init 2 */
/* USER CODE END USART2_Init 2 */
}
This is the full main.c code:

As you can see I'm calling HAL_UART_Receive_IT to receive the data from Tera Term into non-blocking mode and store it into recv_data buffer. I have configured Tera Term accordingly(baud rate for the port).
I have implemented HAL_UART_RxCpltCallback in main.c and I try to light up the led there. So when a character is received the code should get into this routine and light up the LED.
However the code never reaches HAL_UART_RxCpltCallback routine :(.
I have tried sending a character from Tera Term and then stepping into HAL_UART_Receive_IT function in debug mode to see what happens. It would appear that no matter what character I type in Tera Term the value this function for pData argument is always '0/'. The way I send characters in Tera Term is simply writing them into the terminal. I guess that's the way to do it I tried also pressing enter same result. After this the function returns HAL_OK but the interrupt routine does not get fired. The next time I try to enter HAL_UART_Receive_IT function again it always returns HAL_BUSY.
Please help me understand why this does not work as expected. THank you!

I have identified the problem. I'm stupid and I forgot to enable USART2 global interrupt from CubeMx(USART2->NVIC settings I needed to check 'Enable global USART isr' tickbox.

I don't use Cube, but you are probably not supposed to call this function in a loop.
If you insist on using Cube, you may want to have a look at the examples in CubeF4, for any board (the EVAL boards tend to have more examples than other boards), UART will be the same.

Where is the Rx/Tx pin configuration?
2019-12-14 10:50 AM
It is in the function below which is called by HAL_UART_Init function(line 164 from my code posted above):
void HAL_UART_MspInit(UART_HandleTypeDef* huart)
{
GPIO_InitTypeDef GPIO_InitStruct = {0};
if(huart->Instance==USART2)
{
/* USER CODE BEGIN USART2_MspInit 0 */
/* USER CODE END USART2_MspInit 0 */
/* Peripheral clock enable */
__HAL_RCC_USART2_CLK_ENABLE();
__HAL_RCC_GPIOA_CLK_ENABLE();
/**USART2 GPIO Configuration
PA2 ------> USART2_TX
PA3 ------> USART2_RX
*/
GPIO_InitStruct.Pin = USART_TX_Pin|USART_RX_Pin;
GPIO_InitStruct.Mode = GPIO_MODE_AF_PP;
GPIO_InitStruct.Pull = GPIO_PULLUP;
GPIO_InitStruct.Speed = GPIO_SPEED_FREQ_VERY_HIGH;
GPIO_InitStruct.Alternate = GPIO_AF7_USART2;
HAL_GPIO_Init(GPIOA, &GPIO_InitStruct);
/* USER CODE BEGIN USART2_MspInit 1 */
/* USER CODE END USART2_MspInit 1 */
}
}

it is no problem if you call it in a loop. it's just a non blocking api call. if you don't call it in a loop actually you may miss the reception.

For USART, go for LL (low layer): there should be code example on Nucleo projects.

hi. I did look at some examples. I have no ideea what am I doing wrong :(. It may be something from Tera Term which I'm doing correctly because the code was generated by CubeMx so it should be correct.
