SPI TransmitReceive wrong behavior

Hello ST expert.

I'm trying to create SPI communication as shown in the CubeMX image.

Paulo971_0-1716058239690.png

Normally with the HAL_SPI_TransmitReceive function I should receive on my spi_buf_rx the same thing as spi_buf_tx but instead I receive 255 as shown in the debugging session.

Paulo971_2-1716058418846.png

What have I done wrong?

Best regard.

What makes you believe this?

Did you have your "debugging session" displaying the buffers when you ran your code?

Have you examined the SPI signals with a scope or logic analyzer?

the last screenshot is my debugging session which shows me that I have two different things.

I followed the tutorial below and it shows that there is exactly the same thing for the tx and rx buff.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5MYlSn-wR5g

I don't have the tools to examine the SPI signal.

What I see on your debug session:
- you send four bytes and you get four bytes (as it should with regular SPI as "full-duplex")
- you get 0xFF as bytes back on MISO (Rx) (looks like "open" MISO signal or external chip does not respond)

Why? You have to figure out why:
- is there a chip connected?
- are you sending the "right" command ("SPI Protocol"), with correct SPI mode, MSB vs. LSB, clock speed so that the external chip should respond? Is the nCS signal correct and connected? (is your external chip high or low active?)

If you are not sure if your SPI on MCU works:
- disconnect the external chip
- and connect with a flying wire MISO and MOSI: do you see now that all comes back in the same way as you have sent?
- you can also connect nCS with MISO: you should see all zero (if your nCS is low active)

If so: your SPI on MCU is fine. Everything else, why you do not get a SPI response from external chip, is related to the "SPI Protocol", how do you talk to the external chip (SPI mode, MSB. vs LSB, coding of SPI bytes, CS behavior (low or high active), SPI clock you use, ...).

Test it step by step:
- fill receiver buffer with a pattern - is it overwritten with 0xFF - then you get 0xFF on MISO
- verify if nCS, SPI mode, MSB vs. LSB, SPI clock speed are correct
- verify that you send the right coding for a command, the right length for a transaction, right parameters
- verify that your external chip is powered, out of reset
- verify if you have to send a specific command first, e.g. to bring chip form deep sleep to active mode

Most of the time: I try to read the Chip ID via SPI from an external chip. If I do not get a reasonable response, telling me the correct/expected ChipID - I do not keep going to use or configure the chip.
If the chip does not have a ChipID: go to datasheet and see if you can find a register with reset defaults which are not all bits 0 or 1, e.g. a value not 0 or 0xFF: try to read this register. If you get it correctly - your SPI and "SPI protocol" is correct.

If all this does not work - it does not make sense to keep going. The basics have to work first.

Is the SPI MOSI/MISO loopback wire installed correctly?

You used the NSS(CS) pin as standard GPIO (Software NSS Signal).
You have to control the NSS(CS) pin by Software.

static void MX_SPI3_Init(void)
{
  hspi3.Init.NSS = SPI_NSS_SOFT; // Software NSS Signal
}

static void MX_GPIO_Init(void)
{
  /*Configure GPIO pin Output Level */
  HAL_GPIO_WritePin(SPI3_CS_GPIO_Port, SPI3_CS_Pin, GPIO_PIN_SET); // CS = High
}

int main(void)
{
  HAL_GPIO_WritePin(SPI3_CS_GPIO_Port, SPI3_CS_Pin, GPIO_PIN_RESET); // CS = Low
  HAL_SPI_TransmitReceive(&hspi3, spi_buf_tx, spi_buf_rx, 4, 100);
  HAL_GPIO_WritePin(SPI3_CS_GPIO_Port, SPI3_CS_Pin, GPIO_PIN_SET);   // CS = High
}

SPI3 is the Master and since NSS is configured as software the SPI module doesn't care about it.  The CS signal is only for the Slave's benefit in this case - he'll get a SPI clock and MOSI driven even without a CS assertion.

Please find the diagram showing how my BLE module (Adafruit Bluefruit LE SPI Friend) and my MCU are connected.

I need to receive data from the BLE module and send data from the MCU.

I've changed the prescaler to 16, checked the cables and so far I've used the function ‘HAL_SPI_Receive(&hspi3, spi_buf_rx, sizeof(spi_buf_rx), 1000)’ but I still can't receive any data.

Hello Danisgah,

I have followed the debug steps and I still have no communication, I send the number 21 with my android application and I should see it on putty thanks to my uart connection but I am not receiving any data from my SPI.

Disconnect MOSI and MISO from the BLE module.

Connect MOSI and MISO at the MCU.

Run your test.  You should see the same data received as transmitted.  If not, your configuration of the SPI is likely incorrect.  If it's the same, disconnect MOSI and MISO from each other and reconnect to the BLE module.  Then research the SPI protocol of the BLE module and implement that in your code.
