I'm not too familiar with the VL53L3CX in particular but if all the code is directed towards a different board then you might need to change and adapt the code to fit with your STM32F407 discovery board.
When you mention that you are unable to make it work, could you provide some additional details of what errors you are encountering and what you've tried so far?
Perhaps even some sort of step-by-step guide of what has been done and what errors that resulted in?
