Basically it is an issue of supply vs demand.
The lack of availability is then compounded by aggressive buying and forward ordering of supply.
Any free stock held at Digikey or Mouser is going to be bought quickly.
The reasons are many fold, try a few business magazines for their analysis.
But think pandemic, staffing, materials, capacity.. and things only being planned and built with a physical order behind them.
