L7987L switch mode power supply battery charging application. My plan is to have a rectifier followed by the L7987L buck-converter then a rechargeable battery. There is some protection provided by the Colomb counting current sense resistor.

My question will significant current from the battery flow into the L7987L when there is no input voltage but the input is open circuit? Therefore do I need to add an output series diode (for example a MOSFET transistor switched on for lower voltage drop).

In the picture attached Tr5 provides the reverse isolation. A6985F has an output crowbar protection function that may not be a problem I understand but I added Tr5 for the prototype stage. There is no automotive crowbar function mentioned for the L7987L.
