L6480 data sheet says the /CS must be raised between bytes but Figure 19 shows it remains low for the whole message, so one piece of the datasheet must be incorrect as both cannot be true. What is the correct operation please

You got confused by the drawing: figure 19 of the data sheet illustrates the transmission of only one byte, starting with the MSB (most significant bit) and ending with the LSB, after which /CS is raised as required.
