I am trying to identify this component. It is an SMD device with two legs and on it is the inscription NL C815. Search on the net has not given any positive results. (See Pic) Any help on identifying this and its equivalent would be much appreciated.

Try make partialy schematics, where was placed. Too marking on board is usefull

This is likely a diode or a TVS, but as there's no vertical bar marked close to one lead (showing the cathode of a diode) , my take goes for TVS :

Thank you for your reply. As there is no vertical bar as you too pointed out I am not convinced it is a diode. Further checks with a multimeter does not show it is a diode (assuming the component is okay ofcourse). What is a TVS? Pardon my ignorance :smiling_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Thank you for your reply.

May I ask the rationale behind arriving at this specific diode SM6T56A please?

Page 11 of the datasheet shows that NL marking stand for SM6T56CA.

Page 10 says that CA code stand for bidirectionnal : this is a bidirectionnal TVS, equivalent to two Zener diode reversed in serial. This is a non polarized dipole thus it as no marking for a cathode (the vertical bar mentionned in precedent post).

A TVS is a kind a Zener diode or Varistor wich can briefly handle high energy and is used to protect circuit against over voltage. It is fast.
