5V Tolerant IOs

Hi

The data sheet says that the general purpose IOs (section 2.23) are 5V tolerant, meaning ''... they can be driven safely by a voltage up to 5.5V''.

But in Electrical Characteristics - Absolute maximum ratings (section 6.1) it says that Vin max is 4.0V, which is as I would expect if diodes are used on the inputs for ESD protection.

The two pieces of information seem to conflict. Perhaps I have misunderstood?

So, is it acceptable to drive the inputs from 5V logic in practice, or will this result in very high current usage or some other undesirable effects?

UPDATE:

I received the following response from ST technical support:

''Hello, There is in fact some missing information in the data sheet - rev 1. I will send you by separate email the rev 2 of this data sheet ( see on table 😎 We will update the Absolute Maximum table in the next version''

In the rev 2 data sheet, Table 8 ''DC Electrical Characteristics'' now has a note for VIH max for General Inputs that says ''Input pins are 5V tolerant, max input voltage is 5.5V''. VIH min is shown as 2.0V for General Inputs.

So I think that the GPIO pins can be driven at 5.5V under normal operation.

I guess the updated data sheet (rev 2) will be on the website in due course.
