Also, maybe the ability to draw direction arrows - think person heading in a direction but software knows they need to head to a different degree so arrow points they way they need to go.

Welcome to the ST Forum !

For your compass project, I could recommend you to use SVG Images, and maybe Texture Mapper.

Those widgets come with several methods that can help you rotating, scaling and moving images on your screen.

Hope that helps you getting some ideas.
