I mean I set the period and the prescaler of a timer

and it gives out square wave at a pin ?

( I mean without using the timer interrupt )

A timer as a PWM generator. See for instance Manual RM0008 (Doc ID 13902 Rev 12), Capital 15.3.9 on page 368.
