Table 179 in revision 10 of the reference manual seems to be quite clear.

Nope, mine is revision nine and table 179 doesn't mention it.

In revision 9, it is table 177.

This should be referenced from the register descriptions and I still think it's poorly worded (like much of ST's documentation, sadly).

This is something that could be handled by ST's Standard Peripheral Library USART module but isn't (in v3.3.0).

thanks robert. i just read it before using nine bit protocol :)
and also agreed about the bad documentation of ST :( except firmware library user manual which is quite better
