Version 2.1.0 of the STM32Cube VS Code extension added the support of:
Working with simple / single-core devices, requires STM32CubeMX v6.11 and STM32CubeCLT v1.15.
Working with TrustZone, Dual-core, or Boot flash devices, requires using STM32CubeMX v6.12 and STM32CubeCLT v1.16.
STM32CubeMX 6.12.0 CMake project generator has the following limitations:

The startup files like startup_stm32c011f6ux.s are still broken. The g_pfnVectors handler order looks better now, but all reserved entries are still missing as in STM32 VS Code Extension generates startup file wit... - STMicroelectronics Community and duplicates for other series. This makes the startup files unusable when dealing with interrupts.
Otherwise, I like this new, lightweight approach pretty much.

I cannot speak for ST, but they had a major update previewed at Embedded World this spring. So I would say: stay tuned
