I've been complaining about this for months. You have to be actively logged in to Reply to posts, generally you'd do this be using the ''Sign on to forum'' link in the upper right where your avatar normally appears. However it is not always clear if your current session has timed/logged out, as the avatar can still appear in some situations due to server side caching or some such.

If you take a couple of minutes composing a reply, save it to the clipboard or notepad, the system is known to eat posts occasionally if the session times out mid composition.
