I do not understand where BATD is connected to? Is it connected to the negative end of the battery? I am using a single cell battery with only 2 terminals but this seems to imply there are 3 battery terminals.

Well, the function of BATD is actually described in detail in the data sheet: the presence of the battery is checked via the pin for batteries with integrated Rid, which can also be a thermistor. If you only have a two-pole single cell battery, you can of course neither measure its temperature nor check its presence and should connect BATD to GND via a resistor - not directly to GND, because the pin can be connected internally to VDD, which would lead to a short circuit.

Does it answer your question?
