Your question has too much unefined variables.
The LIS2MDL does not detect "metal" or "magnets", but magnetic fields.
The field change caused by the object must at least exceed the noise threshold to be detectable.

Is the principle same for all the magnetometer sensor?

And how to find the range (distance) of magnetic field change of the sensor?

As always. Apply a reference signal (field of known size), and observe the sensor output.
Using geometry and the sensor datasheet (full scale range), you can calculate expected data.

I will look into it, Thank you!!!!!

Or you can trust the datasheet, and assume the LIS3MDL conforms to the given specifications.

Already I have worked on two other magnetometer sensor and the output obtained was still not as so close to the specs provided by the datasheet
