Open Drain and Push Pull configuration for GPIO

All,

In STM32 the GPIO output can be configured either PushPull or OpenDrain. Can somebody explain when to use each type? Any references to understand the usage will be appreciated. Thank you.-Anuradha

This is a pretty rudimentary question, to be asnwered by reading basic textbook, and not specifically related to STM32.
