There are a lot of module options. Generally one should be careful about the longevity of chips and modules, and the path to FCC/CE certification, and how much of that you want to own.

You might want to look at the STM32WB series and related modules.

But STM32WB seems to be all wireless except wifi, or I'm wrong about this. IS available a wifi reference project for STM32 microcontroller?

In my project I use modbus on LWIP so I'm not sure about using ESP32 approach on serial port is the right solution because I already have ethernet on LWIP
