I wish to use the 48-pin version of the L5. If I buy a L5 Nucleo board can I target a 48-pin device and debug the code for the 48-pin device on the Nucleo board even though it has a 144-pin part fitted.

You did not tell us which 'L5 exactly, but luckily this is a small family and it's basically the same silicon die in all models.

If the Nucleo has all pins you need brought out, then yes, you can use it.

If the chip on Nucleo 'L552 or 'L562?

In the former case you won't be able to use the crypto functionality.

Also, I don't know whether the are SMPS variants of the 'L5s (P and Q suffixed part numbers); that might make some difference, too.

Other than that, it should be as you've said above.
