VL53L1X readings unreliable when no object in front

I am testing the VL53L1X in medium measurement mode at 200ms timing budget I get 140cm weak return signal value even when there is no object in front.

In long measurement mode with 300ms timing budget with no object infront the values I get are jittery like 410cm and dips of 90cm to 200cm (weak return signal not range exceeded even though it should give Range Exceeded as there is no object in front). Due to this jitter in readings I am unable to decipher from the readings if there is an object in front or not.

Is this a sensor limitation/draw back or they are not designed such that they cant be used in open space with no object in front.

If any help is needed in understanding the readings let me know.
