Clicking on notification opens the thread so that the last message is displayed. It would be much more useful if it would open on the first unread message.
It seems to open at the post to which it relates - which seems reasonable to me.
A complex system that works is invariably found to have evolved from a simple system that worked. A complex system designed from scratch never works and cannot be patched up to make it work.

And IMO that's incorrect, as there is another post above that, which you haven't seen yet. Or at least that's IMO the point of notifications, to show me what's new, not just what's the newest.
