I found the #define "USE_SD_TRANSCEIVER 1U" statement in the stm32h7xx_hal_conf.h file and set it to 0. That made no difference. It is failing in HAL_SD_GetCardStatus --> SD_SendSDStatus which returns the data timeout error.
