How does building CubeIDE Project created from makefile work?

File > New > Makefile Project with Existing Code

When building such a project, am I right that the build is still controlled by the original makefile?

A complex system that works is invariably found to have evolved from a simple system that worked.
A complex system designed from scratch never works and cannot be patched up to make it work.
