What does the "U" stand for in ST's MCUs and MPUs?

This feels like a dumb question but I can't find the answer through Google and I've spent some time looking.

I'm giving a high level presentation tomorrow and in the first slide I'm describing the difference between ST MPUs and MCUs. For the life of me I can't find what the "U" stands for, however...

Can anyone help me?

UNIT! Of course! I should have guessed it was the same U as in CPU.

Thank you for your answer.

It's not specific to ST - they are pretty general terms!

  • MCU = Micro-Controller Unit; eg, Cortex-M.
  • MPU = Micro-Processor Unit; eg, Cortex-A.
