At what point does the LTDC fetch new data from memory?

The LTDC contains a 64x32bit (per layer) FIFO, when does the FIFO request a new burst of data? I.E. does it start seeking AHB and possibly FMC access at 1/2 full? Any information on the workings of this, beyond what the reference manual / app notes say would be helpful.
