I am new to stm32cubeide. I am trying to select a development board stm32f429i-disc1 when the gui opens to "Select a Target" Under the board selector I do not see this board either in the search or using a partial search. Some boards do show however.

How do I update the software to get the newer boards to be shown in the Drop down?

You should select 32F429IDISCOVERY instead.
The differences are covered in the board user manual, the key differences are the updated onboard ST-Link enabling support for MBED, and solder bridges on the UART1 pins. They are not relevant for software development with CubeIDE.
