In order to optimize the motor, the pole pair number (p) at the stator must be equal to p at the rotor.
In order to find p, you have two techniques:
1) Apply a small DC current between two phases and count the number of stable positions in a rotor revolution. This number equals p.
2) p = (number of magnets)/2
