I am looking a solution to design protection for 12 to 16 cell battery pack. I think the L9963E or L9961 maybe work. It is a requirement that no MCU should be used. Can the IC be program with settings by external device and runs by itself without MCU?

Hi,

L9961 supports up to 5x cells , max 25V. It can boot up and run diagnostics / voltage measurements without MCU at a basic level after initial programming of settings, but recovery from errors etc will require MCU intervention.

If 12 - 16 cell, it is advisable to use L9963E which supports up to 14 cells. Several devices can be stacked in a vertical arrangement in order to monitor up to 31 battery packs for a total of 434 series cells. MCU is needed.

For ease of development, an evaluation board is available for purchase - https://www.st.com/resource/en/application_note/an5696-l9963e-evaluation-board-with-on-board-mcu-with-preloaded-firmware-gui-stmicroelectronics.pdf
