Perhaps you should consider putting it in STANDBY (ie handle the imminent lose of primary power case), and checking the STANDBY flag when it comes to reinitializing the RTC. There are also flags for the type of reset that occurred, and there are registers within the BKP domain which you could use to flag your own initialization state.
