All,

I have been in contact with ST about this and they are sticking by their recommended circuit in the figure in the datasheet.

- For the reset circuit: We did not see any failure on the reset pin on the US and the customer should follow our recommendations present on the datasheet.

Please post any further information if you guys do any additional testing.

The ''reset circuit'' design, as shown in the data books, does not provide a series 1K0 resistor from the RESET pin to the RC junction. Consequently, there is unlimited instantaneous current from flow from the Capacitor to the RESET pin. This may cause silicon failures over time, especially if the current flows through the substrate catch diodes. Most likely this is the cause of the failures you have observed.

this is true even for all I/O pin that have clamp diodes: a too large capacitor may inject a harmful surge current while Vdd is falling down.
