The datasheet says that this is a 4Meter part. But what that really means is we guarentee that you cannot range more than 4meters. You can only get to 4Meters if you have a large, reflective target - like a white wall.
In order to range, we need to get a number of photons back. And if the target is small or not very reflective, we don't get enough photons to 'see' the target.
I'm going to guess that you can see a person to about 2 - 2.5 Meters. That's about what you get.
Note that wool is very reflective, cotton is not, plastics (Nylon etc) are somewhere in the middle, so your results will vary.
