I think it is the peripherals that give Energy Micro its specific low-power achievments; eg, the way (some of) them can work autonomously - without having to wake the CPU at all.
Of course, the actual power consumption the you can achieve in your actual application is (usually) far more affected by the nature & design of the application than by the ''low-power'' features of the chip.
eg, achieving really low power relies upon putting the CPU to sleep as much as possible - if the nature of your application doesn't allow that, then you're stuffed - no matter what clever ''low power'' features the chip may claim to have!
