Reprogramming a Spirit1 USB Dongle for different frequencies?

Is it possible / practical to reprogram a Spirit1 USB Dongle (STEVAL-IDS001V5) to operate within the band 921-929MHz (which is available for general use at 1W in New Zealand)?

If so what would be the approach, hardware/software needed?

Views on this would be appreciated. Best wishes, Ron.

Hello,

yes, it is possible to operate in the 921-929MHz band with the STEVAL-IDS001V5. 

Are you planning to use the GUI or to develop a custom firmware? 

  • In case you use the GUI, it's enough that you set the chosen frequency in the ''Frequency base'' field. 
  • Instead, if you want to develop a custom firmware, the installed software package contains also support 

    and code examples 

    for SPIRIT1 firmware development. In order to use or modify the provided example projects, it is required to have installed IAR Embedded Workbench for ARM (v6.40 or above) and a JTAG interface like ST-LINKv2 or IAR JLink. 
By the way, please note that it is not possible to get 1W of output power with the present hardware configuration: the maximum output power is not higher than 12dBm.

Very much appreciate your response.  From what you say we should be able to use the device.

We typically use open source tool chains rather than IAR, for example to programme STM32W108 USB dongles.  Is there any reason why we should not do the same with the

STEVAL-IDS001V5?

we use IAR, but you can use your favourite toolchain, clearly modifying it as needed.
