Query regarding VL53L1CB data depicted on it's website

Under "All features" information, the following data is depicted:

  • "400 cm+ detection with full field of view (FoV)
  • 60 Hz ranging capable up to 300 cm"

In datasheet it's written, the sensor can measure up to 8m. However, this "60 Hz ranging capable up to 300 cm" is not understandable.

What does this mean ? What does 300 cm indicate ? Could you provide detailed information.

One can trade speed for distance. A longer integration time is needed to get the farthest distance, but if you want 60 measurements per second, you just cannot gather enough photons to range the full distance.

Marketing does a wonderful job of singing the praises of the chip, but not a very good job of calling out the tradeoffs.

So time and power are needed for the longest distance. To save power or get more measurements, shorten the integration time. But this costs you the max distance.

If you buy the P-Nucleo-53L1A2, you can do a lot of practicing for a very small cost. Then start on your design. You will be glad you did.
