FAQ: Application notes on STM32MPU power distribution

There are different power supply design solutions possible to supply the STM32MPx microprocessors.

For the supply of the microprocessor, ST recommends the dedicated power management IC, the STPMIC1 for the STM32MP1x family and STPMIC25 or STPMIC21 for the STM32MP2x family.

The STPMICx chip gathers all the required supplies of the STMP32MPx, with the expected power ON/OFF or low-power sequences. STPMICx chip offers a smaller footprint on the design compare to design with discrete power supplies.

With the STM32MP2 family, a discrete power supply solution is not recommended due to complexity

AN5031: Getting started with STM32MP151, STM32MP153 and STM32MP157 line hardware development

AN5031 presents the following:

  • STPMIC1A with STM32MP1 VDD IOs  = 3V3 with a DDR3L
  • STPMIC1B with STM32MP1 VDD IOs  = 1V8 with an LPDDR2
  • Power supply with discrete supplies STM32MP1 VDD IOs  =  3V3 or 1V8 with DDR3L

AN5489: Getting started with STM32MP25x MPUs hardware development

AN5489 presents the following:

  • STPMIC25A with STM32MP2 VDD IOs  = 3V3 with a DDR4
  • STPMIC25B with STM32MP2 VDD IOs  = 1V8 with an LPDDR4

To get a system overview (with STM32MPu, STPMICx, DRAM, boot flash device) ST offers an illustration through a complete application example in below application note. These documents provide many system information about power up/down, low-power sequences, USB management.

We recommend the following application notes:

The application note below ensures the low-power use-cases and is battery-oriented, includes USB, battery charger, eMMC, SD card boot devices.

In these two application notes below, the application is supplied by an external wall adapter supply.

The two application notes below provides the same system level information for power distribution with discrete power supplies. This applies to applications that do not embed the STPMIC1x.

A complete overview of relevant application notes is available in the ST Wiki:
