Welcome to the STM32CubeCLI topic – start here

Hi fellow developers,

Welcome to the new STM32CubeCLI topic! This is the place to ask questions, report issues and share ideas about STM32CubeCLI.

What is STM32CubeCLI? STM32CubeCLI lets developers and DevOps engineers find, download, install, update and run ST tools (bundles) with one cube command: GCC, CMake, Ninja, STM32CubeProgrammer, ST-LINK GDB server and more. It runs on Windows, Linux and macOS. Tool versions can be pinned per project, so your laptop, your teammates and your CI runner all use the same tools.

If you use STM32CubeIDE for VS Code or STM32CubeMX2, you are already using STM32CubeCLI. It installs and updates their tools behind the scenes.

Get started

In a project with pinned tools:

cube bundle install --project
cube cmake --preset Debug
cube cmake --build --preset Debug

This is a beta. More bundles will be added, the documentation will grow, and the command set will be polished. Your feedback helps decide what comes first, so all questions, bug reports and suggestions are welcome.

Kind regards, Mattias

I’m using the STM32Cube Bundles Manger though the STM32CubeIDE for Visual Studio Code integrations for quite some time now. I can see bundle updates available however I’m missing the release notes for each bundle.

E.g. I can update my ‘pack-manager’ bundle from version 0.6.2 to version 0.6.5. I would like to see the changelog / release notes before updating. Similarly I can’t find this info for other bundle updates.

Where can i find this information?

Hi @DEs,

Indeed. That would be highly useful to help developers decided whether the benefit of a specific update outweights the cost or risk it may imply. This need has been foreseen by the team and is already tracked in ticket (ticket not yet planned):

  • T1FWK-3678
  • And here is a ticket to open a link to the user guide (documentation entry point) for the bundle: T1FWK-5355.

Leaving this reference here for traceability both for you and us.

Kind regards, Mattias

So is this replacing STM32CubeCLT or will they co-exist? I develop my code using CLion and STM32CubeCLT.

Hi @MarcV,

A justified question. We will discontinue CubeCLT. Let me be more precise. CLT is not going to “disappear” from st.com as a downloadable package for a long time. But with the introduction CubeCLI there is no reason to continue to release CubeCLT three times per year. Let’s use those resources one something else!
Almost all content inside CubeCLT is available through CubeCLI.

The missing bricks in CubeCLI  compared to CubeCLT today are:

  • STM32target-mcu
  • Older GCC toolchains before 13.3
  • clang-tidy
  • clang-format

Now to your question about JetBrains CLion: We have a very good dialog/interaction between ST and JetBrains despite that CLion is not one of our “Tier1 supported” IDEs. JetBrains have already in advance of our CubeCLI launch started the integration work in their end to re-base their solution from using CubeCLT to CubeCLI.

There feedback to us is that CubeCLI will dratically reduce integration effort/friction of STM32 support inside CLion and offer CLion users more stream-lined workflows vs what was possible with CubeCLT. I will drop an e-mail to the CLion product owner and see if they want make a comment about the status in this thread. And we have the same feedback from a few other partners who are trying to support STM32 with nice workflows and who wants to leverage some of the tools that we offer.

Let’s not only mention what CubeCLI is missing vs CubeCLT.
You will also find that CubeCLI offers quite a lot of other packages that CubeCLT never included. Here is a list of what is available on the mass-market bundle register today:

STM32CubeCLT_1.21.0 mattiasnorlander$ cube bundle list-online
Name : Platform
--------------------------------------------------------
adoptium-jre : aarch64-darwin
cmake : darwin
cortex-svd : all
cube-cmsis-scanner : aarch64-darwin
cube-wrapper : aarch64-darwin
gnu-gdb-for-stm32 : aarch64-darwin
gnu-tools-for-stm32 : darwin
ide-project-converter : all
ide-project-creator : all
jlink-gdbserver : aarch64-darwin
ninja : darwin
node : aarch64-darwin
osgi-exporter : all
pack-manager : all
programmer : aarch64-darwin
project_extractor : aarch64-darwin
rtos-proxy : aarch64-darwin
st-arm-clang : aarch64-darwin
st-arm-clang-hybrid : all
st-arm-clangd : darwin
st-arm-dwarfdump : aarch64-darwin
st-arm-readobj : aarch64-darwin
stlink-gdbserver : aarch64-darwin
stlink-server : darwin
stlink-upgrader : aarch64-darwin
stm32cubemx-application : aarch64-darwin

This list has been manually filter to remove some duplicates and to suppress metadata information in the spirit of making it easier to read in this post…

As you can see a lot of more and smaller packages which means faster environment setup and smaller updates which brings less regression risks.

The bundle ecosystem is just starting. More packages will come. And it is not only about CLI tools, in the bottom of the list you will notice that you can actually download CubeMX2 (stm32cubemx-application GUI + CLI). We will over time enrich the bundle ecosystem with more tools!
