Question

X-CUBE-SBSFU V2.8.0 compatible with STM32CubeIDE V2.2.0?

Hello,

its the first time for me trying to use the X-CUBE-SBSFU. So I downloaded the latest version (V2.8.0) and updated to the STM32CubeIDE V2.2.0 to be up to date.

But the SECoreBin Project is not compiling. I get the error message:

C:/Program Files/ST/STM32CubeIDE_2.2.0/STM32CubeIDE/plugins/com.st.stm32cube.ide.mcu.externaltools.gnu-tools-for-stm32.14.3.rel1.win32_1.0.100.202602081740/tools/bin/../lib/gcc/arm-none-eabi/14.3.1/../../../../arm-none-eabi/bin/ld.exe: ./Application/Startup/se_key.o(SE_ReadKey_1): Unknown destination type (ARM/Thumb) in ./Application/User/se_crypto_bootloader.o

The version V2.8.0 of X-CUBE-SBSFU was released on 05-September-2025 to support STM32CubeIDE V1.19.0

I asked Claude and got this answer:

The assembler does not recognize that this is Thumb code, so the symbol does not have the Thumb bit set. Older linkers tolerated this, but the very new arm-none-eabi-ld (14.3.1, included with STM32CubeIDE 2.2.0) now strictly rejects the BL call from se_crypto_bootloader.c → resulting in the exact errors “Unknown destination type (ARM/Thumb)” and “dangerous relocation: unsupported relocation.”

So my Question:

  • Could it be, that the X-CUBE-SBSFU is not compatible with the latest STM32CubeIDE V2.2.0? Or may I do something wrong?
  • If it is incompatible: Is there any plan to update the X-CUBE-SBSFU code? Do you know when a compatible version will be available?

Hello @Moritz1 ,

yes this is a known issue already reported in this thread:

The fix will be available on next release of  X-CUBE-SBSFU.

Here is how to fix this meanwhile.

1) in translate_key.py , line 106 add

    if assembly == "GNU":
        out += "\t.global "+str(name)+"\n"
        out += "\t.thumb_func"+"\n"
        out += str(name)+":\n"

2) in prebuild.sh

line 60: add a 'x' like this

echo "    .section .SE_Key_Data,\"ax\",%progbits" > $asmfile

This solves the se_key.s issue.

ALL the GNU assembly files in middleware and also in projects should be updated to add the

.thumb_func instruction before each function definition.

Best regards

Jocelyn

Hi @Jocelyn RICARD,

you say “ available on next release of  X-CUBE-SBSFU”

Is there an estimate of when it will be available?

Makes it sense to wait for it?

Hi @Moritz1 ,

the information I have is that version 2.9 will be released in Wk44 so around 3 weeks from now.

Best regards
