I am new to the STM32 environment and I am currently trying to evaluate how quickly I can put together a simple device based on the STM32L432KCU6 Nucleo board. I'd just like to be able to transmit characters via a virtual COM port on a host computer, have the L432 receive it and then send out an SMBUS Read Word message to a specific address on a bus.
Right now I am trying to get very simple USART code to work and it is frustratingly difficult. I was able to stream RX data, but now it won't work at all. Not even an LED will blink. The root cause is some error as the debugger shows that the MCU is stuck in the while(1) after reaching (HAL_RCC_OscConfig(&RCC_OscInitStruct) != HAL_OK).
I feel like I am going about this in a fundamentally incorrect way and am wondering if someone can direct me to (or write) a simple virtual com port example that I can learn from. My existing code (generated via CubeMX + my additions) is below.
Any suggestions on how to implement USART communications and include the SMBUS HAL layer? I'm trying to figure this out by reading UM1884 (STM L4 HAL and low layer drivers manual) but I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong.

Have you UART interrupts enabled in CubeMX. If you Google for instance HAL_UART_Receive_IT
you will find many code examples. Some work, some don't. Also here in this forum, people have posted working examples. Anything more complicated than Uart, I would recommend a logic analyser.

I've been through the exact scenario you're in. It looks like you're using STM32CubeIDE and I found it helpful to start with the STM provided examples. Finding the examples is a task in and of itself. Here's where I found mine:
C:\Users\gene\STM32Cube\Repository\STM32Cube_FW_H7_V1.9.0\Projects\STM32H7B3I-DK\Examples.
The STM32Cube_FW_H7_v1.9.0 part of the path will be different for your project since your using a different STM family. If you can find the examples folder for your board, you'll should see a bunch of folders, one for each peripheral, and there should be some example projects in UART folder that might be helpful.
