SDMMC: auto card detect?

In CubeMX when choosing fatfs middleware it seems to require a gpio pin. Is that just a limitation in CubeMX?

Basically is there a reliable software card detect mechanism using the existing SDMMC lines (4 pin SD card) or must an extra gpio pin be used to the sd card detect pin?

As the sockets pretty much all have a mechanical switch mechanism, people tend to focus on those. ST has some of their board examples use that to generate an EXTI interrupt.

The example code is mostly provided as a demo of functionality, not something that would meet commercial requirements for fit/finish.
