How does building CubeIDE Project created from makefile work?

A CubeIDE Project created using

File > New > Makefile Project with Existing Code

 

or 'Create a new Makefile project in a directory containing existing code'

 

When building such a project, am I right that the build is still controlled by the original makefile?
