TouchGFX 4.27.0 brings major feature updates to improve performance on high-resolution user interfaces, reduce the flash footprint of frame-based animations, and provide more flexibility for assets stored in external flash.

What’s new in TouchGFX 4.27.0

  1. Hybrid double buffering for user interfaces
  • a new framebuffer strategy which combines two full framebuffers in external RAM with a smaller rendering blocks in internal SRAM.

TouchGFX renders invalidated regions in smaller internal-memory blocks, then copies them to the full framebuffer. This reduces external RAM read/write access, improves blending efficiency, and helps save bandwidth on high-resolution applications.

  1. Delta compressed animation:
  • TouchGFX now analyzes frame-to-frame differences in a bitmap sequence and stores only the regions that change as delta frames. This process is performed at compile time, so there is no runtime overhead.

This can significantly reduce flash footprint for splash screens and short bitmap animations when there are smaller changes from frame to frame (not full screen updates frame to frame).

It is especially useful for entry-level MCUs such as STM32C0 or STM32C5 as it uses less flash and improves performance, and for high-performance graphics MCUs as well as STM32H5, STM32N6 and STM32H7.

Note: delta compressed animation is configured through the framework and used from code with a new widget. TouchGFX Designer support is not included in this release; the required C++ animation resource is generated automatically.

  1. More flexible runtime firmware updates
  • TouchGFX 4.27.0 makes on-device application updates more flexible without removing the running application.
  • Before TouchGFX starts, the application sets an offset to indicate which asset bank is active.
  • TouchGFX then applies the offset automatically when reading bitmaps, fonts, and text from external flash.
  • This is useful for over-the-air updates and for reusing assets stored at a different address after a firmware update.

Other developer improvements

  • Retrieve the SVG assigned to a widget with SVGImage::getSVGId().
  • Place vertical scrollbars on either side of a ScrollableContainer from code.
  • Clear pixel data in dynamic bitmaps with Bitmap::dynamicBitmapClear().
  • Generate under root with STM32CubeIDE toolchain from STM32CubeMX.
  • Benefit from improved text rendering performance on NeoChrom platforms.

Bug fixes

  • Fixed duplicated include paths when updating MDK-ARM Keil projects.
  • Fixed an issue where asset names were saved in a different order on each Designer build, resulting in unnecessary version-control changes.
  • Fixed a missing framebuffer-listener notification in HAL::setFrameBufferSize().
  • Fixed decoding of cached compressed bitmaps when using a rotated display.
  • Fixed missing A1 and A2 byte-aligned font options when using GPU2D or DMA2D v3.
  • TouchGFX Designer now accepts negative angles for TextureMapper widgets.
  • Fixed trailing whitespace being added to file paths in generated Application.vcxproj files.
  • Text groups in the Texts tab are now collapsed by default.
